Abstract

It had been a long and grueling war. Beginning with the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939—and, for the United States, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941—the Second World War consumed nations in a brutal and continuous struggle. Every Allied victory demanded immense sacrifice; each step forward fiercely contested on the battlefield.
